The most used sizes are 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) in the Instagram feed, 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) for Reels, stories, TikTok and Shorts, 1280 × 720 px for YouTube thumbnails, 1200 × 627 px on LinkedIn and 1000 × 1500 px on Pinterest. Every network covers part of the design with its interface; we draw those zones below.
Every social network covers or crops part of your design. A price ends up under the like button, a logo disappears behind the account name, a cover loses its text on the phone. This guide gives you the size of each format and a drawing of what shows and what gets cut, so you design it right the first time.

Instagram image sizes
Instagram changed the profile grid from square to vertical 3:4. That is why the size that fits today with no cropping is 1080 × 1440 px. The 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px) and the square (1080 × 1080 px) are still accepted, although the grid crops them.
How it looks in the feed
How it looks in the profile grid
This is where design gets lost. The grid thumbnail is 3:4. A square image loses 180 px per side, a 4:5 loses 36 px per side and a 9:16 Reel loses 240 px at the top and 240 px at the bottom. Keep titles inside the central box.
Reels
A Reel is 1080 × 1920 px. The interface covers about 220 px at the top, 450 px at the bottom and 35 px on each side. The like, comment and share buttons live on the right edge.
Stories
Same size, 1080 × 1920 px. Leave about 250 px free at the top and bottom for the progress bar, your name and the reply field.

Facebook image sizes
In the feed, vertical images of 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) and square ones of 1080 × 1080 px work well. For a shared link use 1200 × 630 px. The page cover is uploaded at 851 × 315 px; it shows at 820 × 312 px on a computer and gets cropped at the sides on a phone.

TikTok video and image sizes
TikTok is 9:16, 1080 × 1920 px. It is the network that covers the most space: the video caption, the music and the buttons take up the bottom and the right edge. Keep about 660 px at the bottom and 140 px on the right.

YouTube image sizes
The thumbnail is 1280 × 720 px. The channel banner starts at 2048 × 1152 px and what matters fits in a central safe zone of 1235 × 338 px. Shorts are 9:16.
LinkedIn image sizes
For posts use 1200 × 627 px (horizontal) or 1080 × 1080 px (square). The profile cover is 1584 × 396 px and your profile photo covers the bottom left corner. A company page cover is 1512 × 256 px, according to LinkedIn help (October 2026).

X image sizes
Post images work best in 16:9, 1600 × 900 px. The profile header is 1500 × 500 px, with the profile photo over the bottom left corner.
Pinterest image sizes
Pins are vertical, 1000 × 1500 px (2:3). A taller ratio gets cropped in the feed.
WhatsApp image sizes
WhatsApp has its own sizes: a 1080 × 1080 px profile photo, 1080 × 1920 px status updates and a square catalog. We explain them with drawings in the WhatsApp image size guide.
How we calculate the safe zones
Networks do not always publish their margins and their interface changes with every update. For each vertical format we compare the margins reported by several design and advertising guides, and we draw the largest one on each side. If you respect that zone, the text is not covered in any version of the app. The canvas sizes (1080 × 1920 px, 1280 × 720 px and similar) are the ones the platforms actually ask for.
If a network changes its interface, the margins change. This guide is updated at least once a year and every change shows in the date above.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size to post on Instagram?
1080 × 1440 px (3:4) if you post from the app, because it fills the profile grid with no cropping. 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) still works and loses only 36 px per side in the grid.
What size is a Reel or a story?
1080 × 1920 px (9:16). In Reels, leave 220 px free at the top, 450 px at the bottom and 35 px on each side.
What size is a YouTube video thumbnail?
1280 × 720 px (16:9). For the channel banner, the text and the logo must fit in a central safe zone of 1235 × 338 px.
What image size works for LinkedIn?
1200 × 627 px (1.91:1) for links and horizontal posts, 1080 × 1080 px for square ones. The profile cover is 1584 × 396 px.
What size is a Pinterest image?
1000 × 1500 px (2:3). Taller ratios get cropped in the feed.
Does one image work for every network?
Almost never. Design at 1080 × 1920 px with the content in the center and crop to each format. That way the safe zone of the vertical networks also protects your design.
