Short answer

An optimized Instagram bio says in 5 seconds what you do, for whom and what the visitor should do. Put your name + trade + city in the Name field, a result instead of a title in the bio (up to 150 characters), your ideal customer, a proof of authority and an action with a link.

You visit the profile of a business someone recommended. You see four emojis, a “Dreamer | Mom | Entrepreneur” and a link. You do not know what it sells, to whom or what it wants you to do. You close the app.

Your bio is the first ad you did not pay for. People read it, Instagram’s search reads it, and Google and AI assistants read it when someone asks about someone like you. Almost nobody spends more than five minutes on it.

The idea for the five steps comes from a reel by Zoé, a brand strategist (@soyzoebulav), published on October 20, 2026, in Spanish. We watched it in full and its caption has the step by step. Here we expand it, correct one fact and connect it with how a profile gets found today.

What does the reel say and what is missing?

The reel opens with a promise: “If I visit your profile and see this… I start following you!”. It lasts 1:25; the author speaks sitting on a sofa and overlays her own profile as she explains. We watched 44 frames and read the caption, which is where the full text is. We could not hear the audio.

Her five steps are: use the Name field, write what you do as a result and not as a title, say who it is for, add a personal touch and close with a concrete action. Plus an extra: a proof of value or authority.

One fact needs nuance. She says the name is “the only part of the bio that appears in IG search”. It carries the most weight, but it is not the only one. In How Instagram search works, Adam Mosseri wrote that they try to “match what you type with usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places”, and recommends putting keywords and location in the bio. That text is from 2021, so treat it as a clue and not as a guarantee of how it works today.

Step 1: What do I put in the Name field?

The Name is the bold text that appears above the bio, different from your username (the one that starts with @), and you can change it whenever you want. Put your name there and, after a vertical bar, what you do and where.

  • Bad: “Ana 🌸”
  • Good: “Dr. Ana | Dentist Santiago” (26 characters)

It makes clear who you are, what you do and in which city, which is what a person types when searching. If you have a local business, the city weighs as much as the trade.

Step 2: How do I write what I do, as a result or as a title?

Your title says what you studied. Your bio has to say what changes in the life of whoever works with you.

  • Title: “Dentist”.
  • Result: “I help you smile without fear of the dentist”.

That said, a vague result fails too. “I transform lives” says nothing. Think of the sentence a customer of yours would say to a friend: “she helped me…”. That is your first line.

Step 3: Who is it for?

If you talk to everyone, nobody feels addressed. Name your customer: families, restaurant owners, brides, companies. One word is enough.

This step also puts you in order. If you cannot name your ideal customer in four words, the problem is in the strategy and the copywriting comes later.

Step 4: What personal touch do I add?

One line that sets you apart: your approach, your method, your story in one fact. Just one, and true. This is where the authority the reel calls a “plus” fits: years doing this, people served, a certification.

Our rule: put only what you can prove if someone asks you in a message. An inflated number in a bio is exposed with a single question.

Step 5: What action do I close with?

Tell the visitor what to do: book, see the catalog, download a guide. An arrow toward the link helps, and the link has to lead exactly there. A link that lands on a generic page undoes everything before it.

How it looks together (made-up example)

We wrote this example ourselves to illustrate. It is not a real client.

Field Before After
Name Ana 🌸 Dr. Ana | Dentist Santiago
Bio Dentist. Coffee lover ☕ Mom of 2 I help you smile without fear of the dentist 🦷 Orthodontics and whitening in Santiago | 12+ years in practice. Book your appointment 👇
Action Link to the home page Direct link to the booking calendar

The “after” bio is 134 characters long, within the 150 that most guides accept. Take it as a pattern: result, city, authority, action.

How do Instagram, Google and AI find you?

Writing your bio well serves four different purposes. This is how we understand them at On Viral:

What you want What it is called What your bio does
To appear in the results SEO Name, trade and city with the words people type
For AI to recognize and cite you GEO The same data on Instagram, your website and your Google profile, with no contradictions
To be the answer to a question AEO One sentence that answers “what they do, for whom and where”
To be recommended by name AGO A verifiable promise and proof, repeated the same way everywhere

There is one fact we can back with sources: according to several outlets, since July 10, 2025, public content from Instagram professional accounts can be indexed by search engines, and it can be turned off in Settings. A clear bio no longer only helps inside the app.

And one limit: Google said in May 2026 that optimizing for AI is, in essence, SEO, and that no special tricks or formats are needed. We apply it like this: clear, consistent and true content.

How do you test your bio in 5 seconds?

Show it to someone who does not know you for five seconds and ask them three things: what I do, for whom and what they should do now. If one fails, that is the line you rewrite.

If you post often, also check the image sizes for social media so your logo does not get cropped, and lean on organic marketing and what SEO is so what you say on Instagram matches what your website says.

We tell you this as business owners: your bio gets fixed with a decision about who you are talking to. Make it today and rewrite your bio. If you would rather we review it with you, message us on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters does an Instagram bio have?

Most guides put it at 150 characters, counting spaces, punctuation and emojis. The Name field is around 30. We could not confirm the figure in Instagram's official help, so check the limit when you edit your profile.

Does my Instagram name help people find me?

Yes, and it is the field that carries the most weight. But the bio counts too: Instagram explained in 2021 that search matches what you type against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places.

What do I put in my bio if I do not have years of experience?

The verifiable things you do have: how many people you have served, what result you achieved in your own process or what certification you hold. Nothing you cannot prove if someone asks.

Does my Instagram bio show up on Google?

Since July 2025 Instagram has allowed public content from professional accounts to be indexed by search engines, according to several outlets. It can be turned off in Settings. Your name, trade and city should match what you say on your website.

How often should I change my bio?

When your offer, your city or your ideal customer changes. If nothing changed, do not touch it just for the sake of it: check every quarter that the link and the final action still work.
