  1. Degree and exequátur. The General Health Law 42-01 (art. 92) requires a degree from a recognized university and the exequátur from the Executive Branch to practice in the health sciences. Ask to see them.
  2. Training and societies. Ask where they trained in bariatric surgery and which societies they belong to. Check membership on each society’s own site, not only from a logo on their website.
  3. Where they operate. The health authority licenses health facilities (arts. 99 and 100 of the same law). Ask for the name of the center, whether it has intensive care and who administers the anesthesia.
  4. Team and evaluation. Bariatric surgery usually involves nutrition, psychology and anesthesia. Ask who evaluates your case beforehand and which tests they request.
  5. Procedure. Ask them to explain in writing why they propose that procedure and what its risks are. Be wary of anyone who promises how many kilos you will lose.
  6. Follow-up. Ask how long follow-up lasts, which check-ups it includes and whom you call if there is a complication.
