AI chatbots for sales in 2027: how they work, what they cost and how not to fail

An AI chatbot understands the customer's question, checks your business data (prices, inventory, opening hours) and answers in natural language. To sell it needs three things: up-to-date information, clear rules for when to hand over to a person and measurement. On WhatsApp, since October 1, 2026, platform service messages above 1,000 per month per number are charged.
Can artificial intelligence improve your business’s sales? Yes, as long as it solves something concrete. The most common mistake is starting with the tool. The question that comes first is: what will happen when someone writes because they really want to buy?
What is an AI chatbot?
It is an assistant that talks with your customers on its own. Unlike a traditional chatbot, which only answers predefined questions, an AI one can:
- Understand the customer’s question even if they word it differently every time.
- Check your business data: inventory, prices, opening hours or the status of an order.
- Generate an answer tailored to the situation.
That connection to your data is what makes it useful. A chatbot without access to your information makes things up or dodges.
What it can solve
- Repetitive questions: opening hours, location, payment methods, delivery times.
- Order status and availability, connected to your system.
- Recommendations of complementary or similar products.
- After-sales follow-up, something people often skip so as not to seem pushy.
- Qualifying the customer with questions about need, timeline and budget before handing them to sales.
What it should not do alone
When the customer negotiates, complains or has a delicate situation, it must hand over to a person. Set that rule before launching: which words or situations trigger the handover? And make sure whoever receives the conversation sees the context, so the customer does not have to start from scratch.
What it costs on WhatsApp since October 2026
Most business chatbots in the Dominican Republic live on WhatsApp. According to Meta’s official documentation, there is a category of service messages, which are replies within the 24-hour window after the customer’s last message. They can be handled by people or by a third-party AI solution. Since October 1, 2026, those above 1,000 per month per number are charged.
Separately, Meta Business Agent, Meta’s AI for conversations, has been charged since July 1, 2026 and has no free messages.
The WhatsApp Business app you use by hand on your phone is not part of that charge, according to Infobae. The charge comes when you connect the platform to a provider or a chatbot. Before hiring, estimate how many conversations you would have per month. More detail in the WhatsApp Business guide.
The kind of bots allowed has also changed. According to several outlets, Meta updated the platform terms so that, since January 15, 2026, AI providers cannot distribute general-purpose assistants (like an open ChatGPT) through it. Business bots for customer service, sales and support are still allowed. We did not find the official text of that policy: check the current terms with your provider.
How to design it before hiring it
- List the 10 questions you get most on WhatsApp. That is the initial scope.
- Define the information sources: prices, inventory, policies. A single, up-to-date source.
- Write the tone: how your brand speaks and what it never says.
- Define the handover to a person and who handles it.
- Decide what you will measure: conversations resolved without help, closed sales, abandonment and satisfaction.
- Test with real customers for two weeks before opening it to everyone.
If your customer service is bad today, a chatbot just repeats it faster. Fix the process first. And if you want conversations to turn into sales, continue with how to sell more with WhatsApp Business.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a traditional chatbot and an AI one?
The traditional one follows a fixed tree of options. The AI one understands questions in natural language, checks data and generates tailored answers. It can also make mistakes, which is why it needs limits and supervision.
How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost?
It has the cost of the tool or provider plus WhatsApp platform messages. Since October 1, 2026, Meta charges service messages above 1,000 per month per number, and Meta Business Agent messages have no free allowance.
Does a chatbot replace my customer service team?
It replaces the repetitive part: opening hours, prices, order status. Anything that requires judgment, negotiation or empathy must go to a person.
What should I define before hiring a chatbot?
Which questions it will solve on its own, what information it needs to store, when it hands over to a person and what you will measure: resolved conversations, closed sales and abandonment.
