A niche website is a site focused on a specific topic for a concrete audience, monetized with advertising, affiliates or its own products. To work in 2027 it needs content with its own perspective, not mass pages of little value: Google considers creating many pages to manipulate rankings scaled content abuse, regardless of whether an AI or a person made them.
A niche website is a site that talks about a concrete topic for a concrete group of people. It does not try to cover the whole internet. It covers, for example, challenges in a video game, recipes for a specific diet or diving equipment for beginners. Its advantage is depth: whoever arrives finds everything they need about that in one place.
What sets it apart from other types of websites
- A personal blog talks about what interests the author.
- A general portal covers many topics.
- A niche website chooses a topic and masters it, with a recognizable audience.
How to create a successful niche website
1. Choose a topic with an audience and something to add
Look for a topic where people are searching for answers and where you can say something that is not already in the first ten pages. Ask yourself whether you could write about it for two years and what your advantage is: experience, access to data or a different way of explaining.
A quick niche test: write ten different questions someone in the topic would ask. If you cannot reach ten, the niche is too narrow. If you reach fifty effortlessly, there is material for years.
2. Research what people search for
Use Google Search Console once you have data, and keyword tools at the start. Write down the audience’s real questions: they are the titles of your first articles. Learn more in our guide to what SEO is and avoid the pitfalls in the most common SEO mistakes.
3. Domain, hosting and platform
A clear domain and a platform you control. WordPress is a common option; there are also static site generators. Prioritize speed and a good experience on mobile.
4. Create content with your own perspective
This is where it is won or lost. Generic guides anyone could put together from other people’s pages carry little weight. The ones that include your experience, your tests and your data do. A video game niche website that explains a challenge with its own screenshots and the results of testing different strategies beats one that summarizes it from memory.
A figure from our blog illustrates it. The two image size guides, which solve a very concrete question with our own drawings, added up to 1,585 and 758 views in 12 months in Google Analytics 4. The first 16 articles we removed, for being generic, added up to 78 views among all of them.
5. Optimize for search engines and AI assistants
Clear structure, direct answers, images with alt text and internal links. Google stated in 2026 that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO: more details here.
6. Monetize
| Route | How it works | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising (AdSense) | Pays for visits and impressions | Original content and a good experience, without ads that get in the way |
| Affiliates | You recommend products and earn a commission | Always disclose that you are one and provide your own tests |
| Your own products or services | You sell what is yours | It is the option that gives you the most control |
7. Promote and connect
Share your content where your audience is, take part in communities on your topic and collaborate with other creators.
The risk of scale without value
Google’s spam policy defines scaled content abuse as generating many pages with the main purpose of manipulating rankings rather than helping users. It includes using generative AI to create many pages without adding value, or stitching together content from other pages without adding anything, and it applies “no matter how it is created”. It is the fastest way for a niche website to lose its rankings.
Two similar practices are also flagged. Affiliate pages are considered thin when they repeat the same content as other affiliates without adding value, and “doorway” pages are created only to rank for similar searches and lead to a less useful intermediate destination.
The practical rule: fewer pages, with more value each. If a page does not offer something others do not have, do not publish it.
When it is not a good idea
- If your only interest is money and not the topic, it will show in the content.
- If you expect income in the first weeks.
- If you depend on a single traffic channel.
Checklist before publishing
- Can I name my reader in one sentence?
- Do I have ten real questions to answer?
- Does every page have something of mine: a test, a figure, a screenshot, a reasoned opinion?
- Does it load fast on mobile?
- If Google stopped sending me traffic tomorrow, would I have another way to reach my audience?

Frequently asked questions
What is a niche website?
It is a website devoted to a very specific topic, such as gluten-free recipes, mods for a video game or aquarium guides, that brings together a concrete audience and is monetized with advertising, affiliates or products.
How does a niche website make money?
With ads (for example, AdSense), affiliate programs, sales of its own products or services, and sponsorships. The one that works best usually combines two or more.
Can a niche website be created with AI alone?
AI can be used as support, but publishing many generic pages without value of their own goes against Google's spam policies, which do not distinguish between AI and people: what counts is that the content is mass-produced, unoriginal and of little value.
How long does a niche website take to generate income?
It usually takes months. Traffic grows as you build up useful content and authority in your topic. Anyone promising fast income is usually selling a course.
How do I know if a niche has demand?
Look for people's real questions in Google's suggestions, forums and communities on the topic, and check whether there are steady searches with clear intent. If you cannot find ten different questions, the niche is too small.
Does an affiliate website work as a niche website?
Yes, as long as it adds something of its own. Google considers affiliate pages thin when they repeat the seller's description without adding anything. Those that offer original tests, comparisons or reviews can rank.
